Tshwane suspends bus service ‘until further notice’

Operations would only resume as soon as all the negotiating parties have reached a mutual agreement in the wage negotiations.

Tshwane bus operations remained suspended on Thursday, pending negotiations between the city and the unions representing the workers.

The metro was engaged in talks with the South African municipal workers union (Samwu) and the independent municipal and allied trade union (IMATU), in a bid to break the back of the strike that has crippled the Pretoria CBD in the last few days.

This week, municipal workers affiliated to Samwu blocked all major roads through the Pretoria CBD with municipal trucks and buses as they marched to Tshwane house demanding a wage increase of 18 percent.

Although the labour court has declared the strike illegal, the unions continued with their protest and brought the city to a standstill.

“As a caring city, we had to make sure that the safety of our commuters and of our assets was not at risk, hence we had to take a decision to suspend all the bus operations,” said MMC for roads and transport councillor Sheila Lynn Senkubuge.

The interruption in bus operations has now entered its fourth day.

Senkubuge said operations would only resume as soon as all the negotiating parties have reached a mutual agreement in the wage negotiations.
