UPDATE: Intimidation will not stop service delivery – Tshwane metro

“In as much as technicians want to assist to restore power and attend to water leaks they are being threatened and intimidated.”

Service delivery in Pretoria will continue despite the municipal workers protesting in the inner CBD.

Tshwane metro said ‘frustrated’ and ‘inconvenienced’ residents would have to bear with the metro during the current protest action.

“In as much as technicians want to assist to restore power and attend to water leaks they are being threatened and intimidated,” said the metro.

Mare-Lize Fourie, Tshwane MMC for finance said: “We are still experiencing high levels of intimidation to prevent service delivery as a result of the illegal strike.”

She said municipal infrastructure was being damaged.

She said a media release would be issued during the day to provide clarity on the matter.

This comes after striking workers allegedly sabotaged water systems in Arcadia, Pretoria Central, West and Waterkloof.

The areas suffered without water for several hours on Tuesday.

An anonymous source said, “We suspect that valves have been closed by striking workers, our standby team will investigate on our side.”

“No call centre staff were at work either,” the source said.

“We appeal to the public to notify us of any suspicious activity.”

Service delivery in Pretoria remained disrupted since Monday, following protest action by metro workers affiliated to the South African municipal workers’ union (Samwu).

Tshwane metro advised residents to anticipate delays in the turn-around time to calls logged on service delivery-related matters through the city’s customer care centres.

“The city apologises for any inconvenience that might arise as a result of this unanticipated disruption,” the metro said.
