More than 200 arrests in Tshwane
“We had two roadblocks where to ensure we enforce compliance in terms of the rules and regulations of Covid-19 on the roads."
Several arrests were made during operation O Kae Molao on Thursday by law enforcement in the Tshwane district region.
About 224 people were arrested, 616 vehicles searched, 1 051 people searched, 20 TMPD fines issued to the value of R16 750 and 114 Gauteng traffic fines issued to the value of R59 730, according to Tshwane district commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni.
“Twenty people were arrested for non-compliance under the disaster management act, another four for drug arrests and four illegal immigrants were arrested.”
Mthombeni said 24 vehicles were impounded, to the value of R144 000 and illicit cigarettes confiscated also worth R144 000.
Law enforcement holds operation O Kae Molao every Thursday, led and directed by the Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mawela, who is in charge of the Gauteng province.
Mthombeni said the recent operation was in two phases. Phase one started on Wednesday evening and phase two started on Thursday.
The first phase started with Tshwane SAPS crime intelligence and Tshwane SAPS trio task team last night until the early hours of this morning.
“While both components were conducting the operation, out of a list of 201 wanted suspects for various crimes, ranging from trio crimes (murder, hijacking, and business robberies), rape, theft, domestic violence, gender-based violence, the police managed to arrest 196 of those.”
Mthombeni said the second phase of the operation was split into four activities called bubbles.
“We had two roadblocks were to ensure we enforce compliance in terms of the rules and regulations of Covid-19 on the roads. We stopped and searched for stolen motor vehicles, possession of stolen items, drugs and compliance of road traffic act.
“When conducting roadblocks we checked for whether people have valid permits.”

The Department of Health held screenings at the roadblocks
Besides the two roadblocks, the police had a crime prevention team drug team and second-hand goods team as part of the operation.
Mthombeni said the operation conducted in the area of Tshwane around Mamelodi, Nellmapius and Eersterust consisted of the TMPD, Department of Health, provincial emergency services and the SANDF.
In Nellmapius extension 4, police made a successful drug arrest and impounded several taxis during a roadblock.
“As the country moves to level three the community is urged to assist the government by adhering and abiding by the law to ensure the spread of the coronavirus flattens. Tshwane has been identified as Coivid-19 hotspots and all major role-players are stepping forward in ensuring that the spread is minimized.”
He said the hotspots will be monitored as the operations run weekly.
