Unique Moot competition back as fourth sidewalk champion is announced

"If each and every resident keeps their area clean, it would already make a huge difference."

A new winner was announced for Capital Park’s sidewalk of the month award.

For the month of June, Jenny and George Pieterse of 7th Avenue were awarded as having the best-kept sidewalk in the area.

“We are very proud to have received this award,” George told Rekord this week.

The award was given to the couple on Monday, by real estate agent of Real One Real estate, Donne-Li Johnson.

“I still cannot believe we won this award. It is really a great achievement for us,” he said.

George said the sidewalk of the month competition was ‘a wonderful initiative’.

“The competition is a wonderful concept,” he said.

“From the first day I saw it in the Rekord newspaper, I thought to myself that it was something that would challenge the community to keep the area clean.”

He challenged other residents to also take part in the competition.

“If each and every resident keeps their area clean, it would already make a huge difference,” he said.

“Even if you do not win the competition, knowing the area is clean is prize enough.”

The couple, who has been living in the area for about 34 years, said they loved living in Capital Park.

“We will never move,” George said.

“The area is very quiet and we enjoy the atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone and the people living here are very friendly.”

This was the fourth time competition winners were announced for the year. Johnson said the competition was halted due to level 4 and 5 lockdown regulations. The competition could, however, continue under level 3. She urged residents to take part in the competition and to keep their area clean.

Real One Real Estate joined the competition shortly after it was started in May 2018. Johnson also hands the winner’s trophy over each month.

“I drive through the suburb and look for properties whose sidewalk stands out,” she explained.

“I know the area quite well, as I also live here, so it is a pleasure for me to do this.”

The sidewalk of the month competition is the brainchild of the Capital Park Residents and Ratepayers? Association (Caprra). Caprra chairperson, Mike Burt said the trophy would be awarded monthly, not only to the most beautiful sidewalk but to the most well-maintained.

“Not all sidewalks can be made beautiful because there is very limited space,” he said.

Winners receive a big trophy, which moves from winner to winner and stands in front of the house. They also receive a small trophy which they keep.
