Cops ‘hot on heels’ of north politician’s murderer
One person was said to have been taken into questioning in connection with the murder of Mapiti Matsena.
Police were allegedly hot on the heels of the lone assailant believed to be behind the murder of prominent politician Mapiti Matsena.
“We believe we are very close to the correct person,” police minister Bheki Cele said on Friday outside the Matsena family home.
This after Cele revealed they had taken one person in for questioning about the gruesome murder in his Doornpoort home on Wednesday evening.
Cele made the remarks after he, community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko and other provincial police leadership paid homage to the Matsena family on Friday afternoon.

“We hope he will tell us why and what happened,” he said.
However, he clarified they were at the starting point of the investigation after a person had been killed.
“We have picked up one suspect and where it leads us thorough investigations are continuing,” Cele said adding it was “fine” if it led them to other suspects.
He further shied away from the possibility of Matsena’s murder being a possible political assassination, saying police were looking for a “criminal”.

“Somebody here has been killed and a person that kills a person is a criminal,” Cele said.
During the intrusion into Matsena’s home, nothing was said to have been stolen except “a person’s soul”. A lone suspect was said to be sought in connection with the murder of the politician.
