Freshly cooked meals for Mandela week

Thandanani Drop Inn in Mamelodi East is preparing freshly cooked meals every day for less fortunate children in Mamelodi, drug users and the homeless.

A local organisation plans to feed more than 1 500 people, including children of Mamelodi, for Nelson Mandela week.

Thandanani Drop Inn in Mamelodi East is preparing freshly cooked meals every day for less fortunate children in Mamelodi, drug users and the homeless.

Thabo Kgotsi, of Thandanani, said this was part of giving back to the community for Nelson Mandela week.

He said centre took pride in preparing fresh meals for the annual event.

Kgotsi added that the project was made possible thanks to the help of various donors who had been working with the centre to help Mamelodi residents.

The organisation is, however, in dire need of donations and funds to help come up with more projects.

“We have identified the hotspots where help is needed most in Mamelodi,” said Kgotsi.

“We will definitely be supporting these sites with daily lunch meals and we will do our best, depending on the food we have and donations,” he said.

“To those that have already generously donated, I would like to say a huge thank you for all your donations,” said Kgotsi.

“This generosity has allowed us to continue our efforts in making a difference in the community during this difficult period and we appreciate your kindness.”

He added that Thandanani believes in “when you give of yourself wanting nothing in return, you eventually become a saviour” to others.

Thandanani also has a school holiday program and in which it looks after children from 08:00 until the afternoons from Mondays to Fridays.

“This program is intended to prevent our future generations from doing bad thing like drugs,” said Kgotsi.

Two teams from Thandanani Drop Inn Centre, namely its drug abuse unit team and the early child development team, are taking care of the children during the day.
