How to stay safe during Black Friday chaos
“Always remember that criminals are looking for easy targets, make sure you are organised, alert, and aware of your surroundings,” he explains.
While Centurion retailers and shoppers gear up for Black Friday this week, police have warned residents to be careful.
“Always remember that criminals are looking for easy targets this time of the year,” said Lyttelton police station spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
“Make sure you are always organised, alert and aware of your surroundings.”
Miller has the following safety tips for people who want to go shopping this Black Friday:
– Always be aware of your surroundings, be sure to keep a safe social distance. This will deter criminals from getting to your valuables.
– Ensure that your handbags and carry bags are always zipped shut and secured to your person.
– Try to avoid crowds. Criminals target people in crowds because they can infiltrate your personal space and steal from you.
– Try not to go shopping for Black Friday specials on your own. Do not take small children into the shops, but if you must, keep them close at all times and do not lose sight of them.
– A full parking area will attract criminals. Please make sure your vehicle is locked by checking the door handles.
– Do not leave any valuables in your car. Criminals are aware that you will be busy inside for a while, which gives them some time to break into your vehicle.
“Do not hesitate to contact your nearest police station or security when you feel unsafe or if things begin to get out of hand,” Miller said.
