Metro hands over upgraded road project to Ga-Rankuwa community

The metro has finally completed the upgrade of roads in the area after the community had been fighting for better services for several years.

The metro handed over the completed roads and stormwater drainage system project to the Ga-Rankuwa community north of Pretoria on Wednesday, May 22.

The project covered about 3.8km of roads and stormwater-related systems, including 12 streets in the area.

This comes after Ga-Rankuwa Zone 4 residents called on the metro for better roads and infrastructure.

According to Mayor Cilliers Brink, the handover formed part of the Department of Roads and Transport’s ongoing road upgrade and maintenance spread across the various regions of Tshwane.

“Despite some delays with the project, the metro has delivered quality roads and related services to our residents.

“This is visible service delivery and serves as proof that our administration delivers to all communities,” said Brink.

He said the total value of the project was R42-million.

Resident Thabang Malatji said the metro did a good thing by fixing the roads.

“The roads had huge potholes that damaged our cars and it’s a good thing that the metro upgraded the roads.

“This mustn’t end here in Zone 4 only, they must repair all the roads in Ga-Rankuwa because this community has been through a lot and we have been fighting [for] this better service delivery for years,” said Malatji.

The metro recently launched a road upgrade worth R20-million on J Maleleku Drive in Mamelodi.

“Part of the work there included improving the lifespan and standard of the roads in the area by removing the old asphalt and replacing it with a new layer.

“Another major project is the Wonderboom Intermodal Facility for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

“The R90-million project is in its final stages of completion and will serve as a major transfer point for bus, taxi and rail. It will also provide holding facilities for taxis and buses, along with park-and-ride services for passengers,” said Brink.
