City buses return, driver shortage cause ripple effect

Thirty drivers were let go two months ago. The metro assures commuters recruitment is already underway to replace them.

The Tshwane Bus Services (TBS) has officially resumed its normal services amid driver shortages.

The TBS is operating normally despite having a shortage of drivers after it dismissed over 30 bus drivers two months ago after a disciplinary hearing.

The dismissals form part of the metro’s efforts to enforce accountability and maintain professional service standards. This has led to a temporary shortage of drivers, affecting service delivery on certain routes.

Tshwane’s MMC for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale said while the dismissals were necessary to address misconduct, they have led to operational challenges.

“We remain committed to providing professional and reliable services to our passengers,” said Mogale.

However, the sudden loss of so many drivers has put a strain on the system, causing some delays and disruptions in bus schedules.

The driver shortage has caused a ripple effect throughout the metro’s transport network.

The MMC acknowledged that the shortage may affect the frequency of bus trips on certain routes.

Mogale has urged patience from the public as they work to mitigate the effects of the shortage.

TBS has made several contact points available for assistance, including a customer care office and a dispatch office for real-time queries.

“Parents with schoolchildren who rely on bus services are encouraged to contact TBS for special arrangements,” she said.

Mogale assured residents the recruitment process to replace the dismissed drivers was already underway and is being treated as a matter of priority.

“The city aims to fill these vacancies as quickly as possible, though no definitive timeline was provided.

“We appreciate commuters’ co-operation and understanding as we navigate this transitional period,” said Mogale.

She said the metro will need to assess the root causes of the disciplinary issues to prevent similar occurrences.

Tshwane residents are encouraged to stay informed by checking for updates on operating routes and schedules via TBS’s social media platforms and official contact lines.

For more information, commuters can contact Tshwane Bus Services at their Church Square office or through their helpline at 012 358 2130.
