Residents unhappy over series of potholes in Centurion

Residents in Centurion are frustrated over the slow response to requests to repair potholes in the area.

Despite the metro’s ongoing efforts to fix potholes in Raslouw and Eldoraigne, they remain a major concern for Centurion motorists.

Residents have expressed frustration over the slow repair response.

Diana Lyn, a Lyttelton Manor resident, expressed her worries about the implications of unaddressed potholes in her community.

“It’s not just about the inconvenience, it’s about safety.

“We need more proactive measures to ensure our roads are safe, especially during the rainy season,” she added.

Amanda van Wyk, a Clubview resident said it’s frustrating to see the same potholes appear after supposedly being fixed.

“The repair work doesn’t last, and we are left with the same unsafe conditions.”

Ward 57 Councillor David Farquharson said the recent heavy rain has exacerbated the pothole problem.

“This persistent rain has led to more potholes, sand getting washed on to the roads, and has even caused manhole covers from stormwater drains to come off due to the pressure from the water,” he said.

Farquharson noted that roads like Warren Street and Cradock Avenue have become unstable, complicating the situation even further.

In Ward 69, Councillor Cindy Billson pointed out specific streets with significant potholes, including Estcourt and Ireland avenues.

“Ireland Avenue needs to be repaired because it is a huge problem. Most of the roads in Centurion are cracking, and if they are not resealed soon, we will see more consistent potholes,” she warned.

Billson said many of the potholes are more than two months old and have never been repaired.

Ward 70 Councillor Marika Kruger-Miller raised concerns about the lack of communication around repair timelines.

“It’s hard to hold city teams accountable on whether work was done or not because I don’t know when or where they fix these issues,” she said.

She said despite the recent repair of Lochner Road in Raslouw, numerous other potholes have been reported.

“Some of the potholes that were reported are on roads including Hendrik Verwoerd and Rooihuiskraal.”

“At the corner of Willem Botha and Penguin Street, where the water department fixed a water leak, that road surface still needs to be attended to.”

She said the rain had made that area worse.

Ward 79 Councillor Johan van Buuren said the metro has yet to repair potholes in his area.

“The potholes have been an issue since the rainy started in December.

“It’s crucial that the metro addresses these pothole issues as soon as possible, as they pose a danger to motorists,” he said.

He added that poor visibility at night due to inadequate street lighting further complicates the situation.
