Cancer organisation holds a sunset get-together
The Devon Vergn Foundation has been helping cancer patients since 2006.
The Devon Vergne Foundation (DVF) recently held a social outreach event for its supporting partners at the Moonshot Café in Waterfkloof Glen.
DVF is a non-profit organisation which began in 2006 when Seonaid Kelly and Vernon Vergne lost their son, Devon, to nephroblastoma (cancer of the kidneys) after he was born in 2000.
Since then, DVF has been a driving force for providing support for children and parents dealing with cancer.
DVF creates spaces for paediatric oncology units in public hospitals that foster a positive mindset among children and caregivers.
Devon’s Playlands or playrooms have featured in hospitals such as the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Frere Hospital (East London), Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
“It was an easy decision for us to start DVF because we have gone through the journey of having a child diagnosed with cancer and we know what it’s like to have a child with cancer and living with cancer. From the day he was diagnosed to the day he passed away was 14 months and those 14 months were extremely difficult. We were fortunate enough to live near a private hospital, he went to a private hospital. When we got out there and met other parents going through the same, they had to come from far away and they had to find accommodation, all sorts of challenges that make a hard journey even harder, so we decided to help where we could,” Kelly said.
On May 7, DVF will be holding their annual Golf Day fundraiser and later on in the year they also look forward to holding their paddle tournament as well.
