Residents of Centurion are urged to avoid the corner of Langebrink Road and Burger Avenue in Lyttelton Manor because another sinkhole has formed in the area.
Ward 57 Councillor David Farquharson confirmed that the latest sinkhole began forming in the early hours of Thursday between 02:00 and 03:00.
“When I was notified about the sinkhole, it was still giving way in the early hours of this morning,” he said.
He said the danger zone has since been barricaded for safety.

However, the hole has already caused significant disruption.
“There is a water pipe in the sinkhole that is broken, so the main feed from the Clifton Reservoir has been cut off to avoid all the water from the reservoir from flowing into the sinkhole,” explained Farquharson.

He said that as a result, locals are currently without water.
Farquharson also warned that there is a mini-substation hanging on the edge of the sinkhole.

“The substation at the site has now shorted, resulting in a power outage across a large section of the area.”
He added that the electricity department has been made aware of the area outage.
Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) Councillor Wesley Jacobs confirmed that action had been taken.
“I contacted all relevant departments, including the regional head, regarding the new sinkhole,” Jacobs said.
He added that a geologist would be dispatched to assess the sinkhole.
“It is important that the mini-substation is secured, and returning water to the area will be a priority.”
He also urged residents to steer clear of the affected area for their safety.
“Residents should please avoid this area if possible,” he said.
Jacobs also mentioned the broader issue of sinkholes plaguing Centurion.
“There are more than 60 sinkholes in Centurion, and this is an extreme emergency that continues to affect a lot of residents.”
Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) spokesperson Isaac Mahamba encouraged motorists to make use of alternative routes.
“Alternative routes include Botha Avenue, Union Avenue, Cantonment Road and Station Road,” he said.
Mahamba noted that a team of professionals from the metro has been assigned to investigate the incident.
The newly formed sinkhole is the third in just a few months to open up in Lyttelton Manor.
In February, two other sinkholes emerged within days of each other.
The first one was identified on DF Malan Avenue on February 18, and the second on the corner of Trichardt and Van Riebeeck streets on February 22.
