Wonderboom Pta-Cpt flights still grounded

"We can assure that you, our valued patrons, will be the first to be notified when flights are back up and running again."

Wonderboom national airport is still in discussions with privately-owned airline Airlink to resume flights to Cape Town after they were halted in 2018.

“The Pretoria-Cape Town connection is vital and discussions are underway to potentially resume flights in the future,” a statement on the airport’s social media page read.

“Our valued patrons will be the first to be notified when flights are back up and running again.”

The statement said the airport’s management apologised for the inconvenience the halted flights had caused.

In June last year, Rekord reported that Pretoria-Cape Town flights were set to reopen as soon as September 2018 after these flights were cancelled in May.

“The airport is ready to accept any commercial airline,” airport manager Waheed Mohamed said at the time.

The flights were cancelled to allow infrastructural improvements to the airport.

The recent statement, however, cited “internal issues beyond our control” as the reason for the interruption of the flights.

The improvements – including the removal of rubble near the runway at a cost of R1.2-million to the metro – were made at the recommendation of regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

“A corrective action plan was made and followed,” said Mohamed.

“In the six months, the airport has seen much change.

“The CAA made several audits, including the inspection of the airport’s aerodrome, electrical infrastructure, fire and rescue services and aviation security.”
