North artist pays tribute to icons

Huma uses his art to tell stories that have to do with human daily lives.

An artist from Soshanguve has paid tribute to the late Mary Twala by showcasing his sketch of the icon and her son Somizi Mhlongo.

Polelo Huma (29), popularly known as “Master P”, said the artwork has been around for almost a year.

“By the time I was doing this, I was appreciating these two icons who made a huge impact in my live,” said Huma.

“Somizi is one of the greatest personalities that has touched so many lives.

He said he was proud of his artwork for being a year older because art does not expire.

“The more years art has, the more it gains value.”

His drawing was selected by the Mhlongo family as one of the top seven sketches that will be appreciated by the family.

He uses Five Roses tea, Colgate boxes, a mask and smoke art to make gender-based violence (GBV) artwork.

“During lockdown a lot of GBV cases were reported while we are also facing Covid-19 pandemic so I decided to make something to honour that,” he said.

Huma has been recently nominated as the best creative artist on Mzantsi Art and Media Awards (MAMA) after winning the Soshanguve Crossing mall character competition in 2018 and a top spot at an art competition named Drawing from Observation.

He also came third in the Nkomo Village art competition in 2019.
