POLOKWANE – Over 1 500 nurses from different districts in Limpopo gathered at the Jack Botes Hall last Thursday morning to celebrate International Nurses Day, on Monday, May 12.
The celebration commemorated Florence Nightingale as the global pioneer of nursing, and was attended by former health and social development MEC, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, and Capricorn mayor, Lawrence Mapoulo, as well as senior officials from the health department.
Nurses who attended the celebration came from different institutions including public services, the private sector, the defence force, correctional services and universities.
The day’s celebration was organised in cooperation with the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa). The theme of this year’s celebration was: Nurses, a Force for Change, a Vital Resource for Health. This is in line with the Positive Practice Environment campaign that nurses have embarked on, which highlights training and education as a key component for the effectiveness of a nurse.
Addressing the nurses, Letsatsi-Duba said the department was very proud of them for serving the community and the people.
“Being a nurse is not an easy profession, but all of you seated here are doing it with passion and with love, nursing us back to health when we are sick. We really appreciate what nurses are doing in the community and in our hospitals,” she said.
