Money talk with Dawie Roodt

POLOKWANE – Dawie Roodt, author of Tax, Lies and Red Tape: Confessions of an Unreconstructed Neo-liberal Fundamentalist, and the chief economist and a director of the Efficient Group, was the keynote speaker at a function arranged by the South African Dental Association (SADA) held at Fusion Boutique Hotel last week.

Roodt had his audience spellbound with his predictions regarding the South African economy for the next 10 years.

Using simple concepts and thought-provoking anecdotes, Roodt told doctors and dentists how the market evolved with humanity, what was wrong with communism, what the global financial crisis was really about, how the state spent taxpayers’ money (and the ways in which it actually should be spent), how money and inflation really worked, the ins and outs of trade, virtual money, toll taxes and the ups and downs of labour.

Roodt’s advice to those present, and to South African residents as a whole, was for them to protect themselves and to keep assets as liquid as possible “in case politicians change any laws that would be a disadvantage to you”.

He further said economic growth in South Africa was going to be very disappointing for a long period to come.

He predicted that another “great depression” might be forthcoming in the world. “It can happen overnight. In South Africa the problem is that government owes too much money,” he said.

SADA Limpopo president, Sybrand van Reede van Oudtshoorn, thanked Roodt for the insight he gave and said he had given everyone a lot of food for thought.
