‘Fake’ cop escapes from prison
Limpopo police are searching for an escaped prisoner who was arrested a week ago for impersonating a police officer for two years.
POLOKWANE – The police have launched an internal investigation after a 39-year-old man, who was recently caught for allegedly impersonating a police official, escaped from police custody at the Polokwane police station last Thursday.
It is alleged that the man reported for duty as a police official at Polokwane police station in 2012 and transferred to Seshego police station about a year ago. A week ago, he was arrested for impersonating a police official.
Col Ronél Otto, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that the man was posted at Seshego police station, but could not confirm that he had also worked at the Polokwane police station.
The man was in police custody for two days before his escape from the Polokwane police holding cells.
Otto said the police were still investigating and until the investigation was concluded, more information could not be released.
“Aside from the internal investigation, two criminal cases were also opened against the man, being impersonating a police official and escaping from police custody,” Otto said.
