LIMPOPO – Education in South Africa has always been the number one priority, with the government and other entities stressing its importance.

This is perhaps the reason why most academic institutions tried to make sure that they steered their learners towards academic excellence. The Capricorn TVET (technical vocational education and training) college held their second annual academic day celebrations recently at the Polokwane campus hall.

According to Mary Makgala, the student education specialist at the college, the tournament’s theme was “Never lose head in success and heart in failure. Every failure is a lesson that gives hope for you to fight back and perform”.

The activities of the day included a mathematics olympiad, a spelling bee, reading, debating, writing and listening. The aim of this event was to strengthen and encourage students’ critical thinking through organisation, persuasion, public speaking, calculation, research and team work. This was to enhance their proficiency in writing, reading, speaking and listening. According to the college, this improved the college throughput and certification rates.

The crowd was also treated to a myriad of performances that included drama and poetry by students from campuses such as Polokwane, Senwabarwana and Seshego.

Students, English and mathematics lecturing staff participated in the event.

Each campus was represented by one student during the competitions.

Despite this being a competition, all participants received certificates of participation and medals from the college. Bricks Motshike, one of the students who attended and participated in the event, said that overall it was a good day. “I really enjoyed myself and our performance as well. It was a great experience,” said Motshike.
