Chiropractor: back pain need not be disabling

Dr Jana Logtenberg, a chiropractor talks about the problems and discomfort associated with back pain, the common causes and risks, complications, management and prevention.

POLOKWANE – Review spoke to Dr Jana Logtenberg, a chiropractor about the problems and discomfort associated with back pain, the common causes and risks, complications, management and prevention.

Chiropractic: healthcare profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders and the effects of these on general health.

“Neuro-musculoskeletal disorders are caused by an everyday action, such as a fall or an accident, lifting heavy objects or even high stress levels, which cause any of the vertebrae to lose its normal motion. This causes the joint to become fixed, leading to further irritation of both the joint and nerve. It may result in muscle spasms and pain in the surrounding area or referral of pain elsewhere in the body.”

Chiropractic care:

– Full medical history check-up

After a complete physical and neurological examination your chiropractor will determine whether X-rays are required.

After diagnosis

The chiropractor will seek to remove any fixations present with a manipulative technique, often referred to as adjustments.

– If a chiropractor cannot treat you, you will be referred to the appropriate specialist.

“Research found that chiropractic treatment produces superior results in terms of safety, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction. Through chiropractic care, patients are shown to take fewer days sick leave, spend less time incapacitated, use less medication for pain relief, have less chance of needing back surgery and have less chance of the problem becoming a chronic condition.”

Chiropractors can help anyone of any age. Should you require more information, do not hesitate to contact Dr Jana Logtenberg or the Chiropractic Association of South Africa (CASA)on (058) 303 4571, or send an e-mail to casa1@telkomsa.net or visit the website at www.chiropractic.co.za.
