Since Polokwane Observer reported the arrest of four so-called bogus doctors on its website on Friday, a further two were apprehended during an operation by Polokwane Police to rid the city streets of the suspected fake doctors behind illegally displayed advertisements for penis enlargement and abortion put up across the city.
Polokwane Police Head of Communication Ntobeng Phala confirmed the six arrests and said they were expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court not later than Tuesday. He could at the time of our going to press not provide the outcome of the court appearance.
At least two Kenyan and two supposedly Ugandan citizens were apprehended in a building in Market Street and a set of flats in Compensatie Street respectively.
Police closedin early on Friday morning on a building in Market Street where a man was cornered and questioned. Several boxes containing advertisements for penis enlargement and abortion were also confiscated. A second man who allegedly walked in unsuspecting of the Police’s presence was also brought in for questioning. Police also gained entry to a dark room where several items reportedly used during ritual and or medical procedures were discovered.
Following the questioning of the two men new information lead the Police to a set of flats in Compensatie Street where two more suspects were apprehended.
The four suspects were taken to the Polokwane Police Station for further questioning. Afterwards Police were allegedly taken to another venue where two more foreign nationals were arrested. One of the suspects alleged that at least 15 suspects were involved in the illegal activities performed by bogus doctors.
Phala on Friday said that they were hoping to rid the city’s streets of the bogus doctors for good. “We will continue to close in on these perpetrators and will leave no stone unturned to get to the kingpin,” he said.
