Eskom connects over 300 households in Limpopo

These homes were connected to the electricity network for the first time on Friday, 7 October.

LIMPOPO – More than 300 households “switched on” to electricity in Bela Bela and Mookgopong.

This forms part of government’s electrification programme aimed at improving the quality of all South Africans. The electrification programme is also being implemented in more remote areas, where the construction of network infrastructure is more expensive due to the distances involved and, in some cases, the difficult terrain encountered.

Together with the Department of Energy (DoE), Eskom has connected more than 4,6 million households to the national grid since 1991. According to the latest Statistics South Africa report, access to electricity has increased from 35% of households in 1990 to over 90% in 2016.

In the next three years, Eskom and municipalities will spend an estimated R17,6 billion to connect over 840 000 households to the national grid, and an additional 70 000 households will be connected through non-grid solar electrification programmes.

More households will be connected to the grid in an effort to achieve universal access by 2025. Eskom believes each household that is electrified brings the nation a step closer to service delivery and poverty alleviation.
