Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton stand at 101.1%

The provincial picture shows the average water levels of the listed dams dropped from 101.4% to 100.1%.

The sluice gates at Grootdraai Dam were closed because the dam has stabilised.

All three of the sluice gates opened recently have been closed because the dam has stabilised just above the 100% mark.

Grootdraai Dam is one of the dams on the Integrated Vaal River System in Mpumalanga. According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s weekly state of reservoirs report, dated February 27, the dam recorded a slight increase from last week’s 100.8% to 101.1%.

Morgenstond Dam, in the Gert Sibande District, is the other listed dam to record an improvement in the water levels, increasing from 100.0% to 100.4%.

The rest of the listed dams recorded declines in water volumes, with Nooitgedacht dropping from 104.1% to 100.0%, Vygeboom from 105.0% to 101.6%, Jericho from 101.9% to 100.8%, Westoe from 100.2% to 99.5% and Heyshope from 105.2% to 101.0%.

The provincial picture shows the average water levels in the listed dams dropped from 101.4% to 100.1%. The water management areas (WMA) followed suit, with the Olifants WMA dropping from 91.6% to 90.7% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA dropping from 103.3% to 101.3%.

In the districts, Ehlanzeni dropped from 102.7% to 102.1%, Gert Sibande from 102.9% to 100.9% and Nkangala from 97.7% to 96.9%.

The department reminded the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country and to use the available water wisely and sparingly even though the water levels look good now.

They encouraged the public to avoid overflowing dams and swelling rivers to prevent the loss of lives and property.
