SECUNDA – Local residents commented on the group of workers who meet each morning at the robot at the entrance to town from Evander, before dispersing into the town to clean up and do maintenance work on various roads, as well as upgrading the town entrance.
According to Govan Mbeki Municipal spokesman, Mr Bheki Kubheka, these are the service providers appointed by the municipality and Sasol as part of a cooperative movement to improve the town’s infrastructure and cleanliness.
Apart from the general maintenance of roads and sidewalks, Libra Landscaping was appointed to beautify the entrance to town by designing a feature garden.
According to Mr Siyabonga Msikili, a landscape horticulturalist for the landscaping firm, the focus when designing the feature garden, was to have a visually pleasing feature that is low maintenance.
“We decided on succulent plants and rock formations as these make a visual impact, but need very little maintenance.
“We also planted various indigenous trees in the middle islands of the road between Secunda and Evander.
“Using indigenous plants are very important, as they are ecologically beneficial and use very little water.”
Furthermore, this joint beautification and maintenance project forms part of an ongoing programme to maintain and uplift the infrastructure of Secunda.
The municipality, in partnership with Sasol Secunda, is committed to fix and maintain various damaged streetlights in Secunda.
According to Mr Kubheka, there is already an agreement in place that will ensure that these repairs happen as scheduled.
He encouraged the public to use the new Govan Mbeki Facebook page for all service delivery problems or complaints.
He explained the reason for the implementation of this new complaint forum and said: “By using this platform, complaints can be forwarded to the correct departments much faster and enable the municipality to attend to the complaints as soon as possible.
“You are encouraged to post your service delivery problems or complaints to the page or contact the municipal call centre at 0800 600001/2/4, or send an email to callcentre@govanmbeki.gov.za.”
