BETHAL – An open manhole in front of OK Grocer on the corner of Vuyisile Mini Street has lead to many accidents.

Motorists drive into the manhole because it is not visible.

Another incident was reported after a man had stepped into the manhole and sustained serious injuries to a leg.

The manhole is still open, though it was reported to the Govan Mbeki Municipality several times.

The owner of OK Grocer has made an attempt to cover the hole himself.

Mr Bheki Kubheka, acting head of Marketing and Communication, said: “Govan Mbeki Municipality condemns vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure.

“We call on members of the community to assist in protecting infrastructure in order to ensure the continued provision of services and the prevention of costly and unnecessary repairs.

“Vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure are costing the municipality lots of money which could be used to ensure service delivery is adhered to.”
