Bethal Correctional Service gives back to the community

The Correctional Centre provided eight offenders and the Social Re-integrated Office helped by providing 30 parolees in order to facilitate the task at hand.

BETHAL – The local Department of Correctional Services embarked on a cleaning campaign at two primary schools in eMzinoni, namely Mbekezelo Primary School and Vukanini Primary School, on Wednesday, 25 January.

The Correctional Centre provided eight offenders and the Social Re-integrated Office helped by providing 30 parolees in order to facilitate the task at hand.

This campaign is a national initiative supported by the national office and Parliament.

It is an attempt by the department to give back to the community.

Mr Caiphus Maleka, head of Security, began the proceedings of the day saying: “We are not here to make arrests,”.

He also introduced the officers who accompanied him and then he handed over to Mr Doctor Simelane, head of Social Re-integration, to elaborate on the purpose of their visit.

The offenders and parolees were divided into two groups in order to begin the clean-up process at both schools simultaneously.

In spite of current financial constraints looming over the department, both schools were left with well-cut grass, clean toilets and an everlasting relationship with Bethal Correctional Centre.
