If music be the food of love, play on

LITTLE FALLS - Join singer Tim Moloi at the Lyric Theater for a celebration of love on Valentine's Day

Timothy Moloi of Little Falls will be one of the vocalists performing with Johannesburg Big Band on Valentine’s Day.

The show, dubbed My Big Band Valentine, will take place at the Lyric Theatre on 14 February at 8pm.

Soweto-born Moloi is from a family of music lovers and singers. “My father is a minister at the Baptist church; our home was always filled with song. My aunts and uncles are singers and there was no way that I couldn’t love singing.”

He studied music and theatre at Ohio Wesleyan University in America and returned to South Africa in 1999.

In 2009 he released an album, Love that Music, which he describes as a mixture of R&B and adult contemporary music. The album received two nominations at the 2010 South African Music Awards.

When talking about highlights in his career, his performance at the 2010 Fifa World Cup is his outstanding moment. “I was so honoured to perform there because it was a global event. Multitudes of people were watching it.”

Another noteworthy experience, said Molio, was his performance for the late Nelson Mandela and his wife Graça Michel, King Willem Alexandra and Queen Maxima of Netherlands in a private concert several years ago.

Clearly a man of many talents, in December he played the magical character of the Genie of the Lamp in Janice Honeyman’s Aladin at the Joburg Theatre.

Many of Moloi’s acoustic covers of various hit songs can be seen on YouTube, some of which have more than 50 000 views.

When he is not in studio or performing, Moloi is glued to the TV watching sports. “I’m a huge fan of all national sports; I love soccer, cricket and rugby.”
