Rain, rain go away

ROODEPOORT - Heavy rains disrupt roads and damage property.

Seasonal rains severely disrupted traffic on 3 February, much like the heavy storms experienced a few days earlier on 31 January.

Roodepoort resident Jan Ellis complained about Johannesburg Roads Agency’s absence on the city’s congested and wet roads, with no vehicles visible to asssist motorists. The agency’s spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “We have stand-by teams who are ready to assist in periods of heavy rain storms. JRA is encouraging citizens to be active and to take ownership of their streets and storm-water drainage systems, potholes, damaged or missing road signs and faulty traffic lights must be reported immediately,” she said. “Residents are reminded to refrain from dumping litter into the storm water system and drains, thereby helping the JRA to keep the storm water areas clear.”

In addition to major traffic congestion and the spate of accidents which so often accompanies weather of this sort, structural damage was reported on Furrow Road, next to the Featherbrooke Hills Retirement Village. Security guard Selamusa Dlamini said, “The wall collapsed early on Friday morning and as it collapsed bricks were strewn all over the road and this caused a major traffic jam during peak hour traffic.”
