An out-of-control veld fire nearly led to a tragedy this afternoon.
The fire was raging in the valley along Elkie Street when trees inside a residential property caught fire, with the flames spreading to a thatch area and eventually to the main house.
The nine people inside the house, which also serves as offices for a business, were helped out by a visitor, Lance van Aswegen and Dowry security officer Marcel Jonker. Jonker had to be treated for smoke inhalation afterwards.
According to unconfirmed reports the fire reached the house at approximately 1.30pm and within half an hour its interior was reduced to cinders.
Emergency services and the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch have restricted access to the area and assisted in all ways possible.
