This Orthodox Christian religious day marks the beginning of the time period leading up to Great Lent, the liturgy of which involves hymns, odes and scriptures.
The week following this day practices no fasting, even on Wednesday’s and Friday’s which are normally kept as fast days throughout the year.
The Triodion is also the liturgical book used by the Eastern Orthodox Church that spells out the proper treatment of the fasting period before Easter and the weeks leading up to their fast.

The Hindu festival highlighting the coming of spring is celebrated this year on 12 February. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the Indian month, Magha and literally means fifth day of Spring. Feasts are held in honour of gods and goddesses one of which being Kamadeva as well as the goddess, Saraswati, of learning, wisdom, knowledge, fine art and refinement.
The day can also sport a theme of love and can be a popular day for weddings in some areas.
