Angry Wilgeheuwel residents protest prolonged power outage

Police presence at the scene has drawn concern from residents, who say they feel threatened by officers’ use of ammunition.

Residents are protesting at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter Road and Johan Street, where one lane has been blocked as they demand the restoration of electricity.

The demonstration follows a power outage that began on Thursday, April 17, leaving parts of the community without electricity for several days. Residents say the situation has reached breaking point.

According to community members, the outage forms part of a long-standing issue, with repeated power failures over the years and little lasting resolution.

The disruption has affected daily life, with reports of food spoilage, interrupted work-from-home arrangements and safety concerns during extended outages. Small business owners have also reported financial losses.

Police are on the scene monitoring the protest, and traffic is affected, with only one lane open.

Residents say they will continue protesting until there is clear communication and action to restore electricity and address the recurring problem.
