Power outages at Rand Water station cause water disruptions in Roodepoort and Randburg

Randburg and Roodepoort residents face continued low water pressure following consecutive power trips at Rand Water's Vereeniging Pump Station.

Residents in Roodepoort and surrounding areas supplied by the Randburg and Roodepoort water system face ongoing low water pressure or supply interruptions following another power outage at Rand Water’s Vereeniging Pump Station.

Johannesburg Water issued a customer notice on September 15 after a second power interruption at the pump station within two days. The first outage occurred on September 13. Pumping at the Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes pump stations resumed at 100% at about 03:00 on September 14.

A second trip at the Vereeniging Pump Station occurred on the evening of September 14, affecting pumping operations at both facilities. Johannesburg Water said operations were restored at 22:00 that night, with pumping again running at 100%. The latest outage has, however, delayed the recovery of water systems affected by the previous disruption.

According to the utility, although bulk pumping has resumed, the affected systems require time to recover as the water supply stabilises and reservoir levels improve.

Network coverage and monitoring

The Eikenhof Pump Station supplies the Randburg and Roodepoort system, as well as the Commando, Soweto, Lenasia and Deep South systems. The Zwartkopjes Pump Station supplies the Central and South Hills systems.

Johannesburg Water warned that customers supplied by the affected systems may continue experiencing low water pressure or no water, particularly in areas where reservoir levels remain low.

Residents in Ward 89 confirmed that their water supply has been affected again after the second power disruption. The utility is monitoring the affected systems and implementing interventions across the network to support recovery.

Investigations will also be carried out in direct-feed areas where water supply has not yet been restored.

Further updates will be issued as more information becomes available. Residents can report water-related service queries to Johannesburg Water on 0860 056 2874 or 010 061 4470, or by emailing fault@jwater.co.za.
