Broken sewer pipe near Little Falls Pleasure Resort causing stench for neighbouring property
Johannesburg Water acknowledged receipt of a request for information and their response will be shared once forthcoming.
Not seen with the eyes, other senses pick up the trace of waste.
Hidden away behind a seldom travelled path, the source of a stench turns a river opaque. Heavy rains in December brought down a foundation wall on the boundary of the Little Falls Pleasure Resort, resulting in a broken sewer pipe which has since been gushing sewage into a river a short distance downstream from the area’s second favourite waterfall.
Employees of international horticultural exporters, Hadeco, noticed the smell at the rear of their property and took a walk through the fields to identify the source. At the corner of their property, which it adjoins the extremity of the municipal recreation site, the employees discovered the collapsed infrastructure. The remains of the foundation wall have fallen into the river, with the broken red pipe that used to connect to the drain a short distance to the side.
Hadeco management reported the matter on January 23 and while given a reference number, have not seen any activity near the broken pipe. The river runs along the eastern boundary of the Hadeco facility, past a residential development and under Hendrik Potgieter Road where repair work to the main road is currently underway.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo were contacted via email on February 15 but had yet to respond at the time of publication. Johannesburg Water was also contacted and acknowledgement of the request was sent on Friday, February 17.
