Fine china and delicate pastries at West Rand Cake Decorator’s fundraiser high tea
More than a mere fundraiser, this high tea brought women from all walks of life together to celebrate friendship, indulge in luxurious treats and take a moment to slow down.
A serene morning filled with the soft clinking of fine china, the aroma of freshly baked goods and the humming of conversation set the tone for the South African Cake Decorators Guild’s (SACDG) West Rand Florida branch high tea fundraiser.
Beautifully decorated tables lined the hall at the NG Weltevreden church where women in shabby chic vintage outfits gathered and savoured sweet treats and warm moments of camaraderie on September 28.

Reverend Hettie Wessels, of the church, provided some words of wisdom to those in attendance while Leandré Visagie presented a colour theory workshop with some fondant.
“Throughout the year we invite guests to come and do demonstrations at our branch, and for that we need funds,” said branch chairperson Lynette Visagie about why they hosted a fundraiser.

She also mentioned that they wanted to market the SACDG a bit and hoped to obtain some new members.
“Many of the guests who attended do not belong to the guild, so we were able to show them what we’re all about.”

There are currently around 16 members at the branch who meet once a month on a Saturday, where they first do the necessary admin and enjoy some refreshments afterwards.

“We also do a demonstration. As with all the branches across SA, we get experts in their field to come and show us techniques that we can apply again. We help each other with advice, recipes and tips. Every month you can learn something new – whether you have been decorating cakes for many years, or have only recently become interested. We then also try as much as possible to practice what we have learned around the house and bring it with us to the next meeting. This is how we build each other up and encourage one another,” she said.

Lynette described the high tea as one of their highlights of the year and said every member worked tremendously hard to make it a success.
