Summit conqueror to delight working moms
Mandy Ramsden, the first African woman to achieve the highest mountain summit on the continent will address the working mothers at Sydenham Highlands North's fourth fundraising breakfast.
The working mother of four, Ramsden was a finalist for ‘Out There’s 2010 Adventurer of the Year.
The Liberty Working Moms’ Guide to Re-Invention will host over 300 women who can look forward to a sumptuous feast, gift hampers, raffles and most importantly, the opportunity to be inspired.
Having spent most of her adulthood as a working or studying mom, Ramsden set off to climb Kilimanjaro in 2006, a goal that had been lingering since childhood.
After having pursued a career in corporate and banking finance she initiated a journey that would take her to the summit of Mount Everest at the end of a ten-week expedition and a four-year journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
Each of Ramsden’s expeditions has brought new challenges, including extreme altitude, brutal cold and stomach-churning exposure. At times, she has had to carry loads weighing almost half her body weight and has had to learn technical climbing and glacier-travel techniques.
In a world where the most talked about statistic is death, each mountain has delivered its own life lessons.
Ramsden will share her own perspectives on these hard won teachings and how her experiences have allowed her to re-invent herself beyond the scope of some of the more traditional roles of mother, partner and colleague.
“On the summit of Everest, the horizon was 100 times further than at sea level and standing there brought a broader vision of what it was possible to achieve,” said Ramsden. She shares this vision, and the lessons learned along the way, with the passion, humour and humility that has propelled her up to each summit.
The breakfast will be held on 18 August at the Sydenham Highlands North Community Centre, 9am.
