JRA to repair dangerous hole

PARKHURST - Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson Sam Modiba said he was aware of the dangerous hole on Emmarentia Avenue near Parkwood Golf Course.

This comes after a report that warned motorists and pedestrians to be careful of a large trap hole on the sidewalk.

The hole is about two metres deep and the concrete blocks are very heavy.

A resident Stephanie Joubert told the newspaper that she stepped on a loose concrete cover and fell into the hole.

She said, “My daughter and I took our annual trip to Parkview to collect pine cones for winter. I think it is a storm water pipe covered by concrete blocks about 1.5m by 1.5m or larger. These blocks are covered by grass and disguised.”

The agency had dispatched an inspector to site to ensure that safety precautions were implemented.

When this reporter visited the hole, it was still not fixed. According to Modiba the process of procuring the correct manhole cover would soon be finalised. He said, “The agency will monitor the manhole on a regular basis until it is permanently repaired. JRA endeavours to address roads related maintenance issues as effectively as possible,.

Modiba encouraged the public to become “Road Ambassadors and report service defects that they pick up along their travelling routes”. He emphasised that road safety remains the road agency’s primary concern.

Communities are also encouraged to report any road related service d theft, vandalism and fraudulent activities.
