Celebrations for International Children’s Day
JOBURG - Children in the care of Childline had fun at an event to mark International Children's Day in Braamfontein.
They took part in activities such as jumping castles and tug-of-war, which put a smile on their faces.
Miss Earth Tamerin Jardine graced the occasion and spent the day playing with the children.
Jardine stressed the importance of giving shelter to children for protection. “The day is so special and children need to know that there are people out there who care,” she said.
Event sponsor, Sunlight brought along a mascot called the Bubbbleman to entertain the children with his bubble blowing techniques.
Children at the function were the beneficiaries of the Sunlight Safehouse Project. The initiative was started in 1997 to offer traumatised children a loving place of safety in the homes of volunteer families.
The mothers in those families, known as the Safehouse moms, were also honoured for their selflessness.
Through the project the company has funded the building of the reception area in the Childline centre. Childline’s director Lynne Cawood said, “We are very proud of the way in which these young people have made a rapid recovery and are engaging with the world in a positive way.”
Cawood said the centre was used to provide professional help for children who required alternative care after hours.
Sunlight representative Bontle Modiselle said, “We wanted to bring joy to the children on the International Children’s Day and celebrate with the Safehouse moms.”
