Wheelchair-friendly equipment at the zoo
A R1 million project will benefit children with physical disabilities visiting Joburg Zoo.

The R1 million project, Redefine Properties Playground will benefit children with physical disabilities visiting the Joburg Zoo.
The sponsors, Redefine Properties donated wheelchair-friendly equipment to the zoo to provide a safe and fun environment for all children.
Company CEO Marc Wainer said, “We are committed to uplifting the communities in which we conduct our business and having noticed that there was no wheelchair-friendly equipment at the zoo, we decided to donate the playground equipment to provide a safe and fun environment for all children. We’re grateful for the enthusiastic cooperation of City Parks and the zoo who shared our vision and commitment.”
Parents with wheelchair-bound children were encouraged to take them to the zoo.
For at least three years the company will arrange for maintenance of all the playground equipment.
Johannesburg City Parks and the zoo collaborated with the company to complete the project. Both entities will sponsor groups of needy children to enjoy an outing to the playground.
MMC for Community Development Chris Vondo said, “Children with disabilities are often the most marginalised in society and it is vital that government, the private sector and communities collaborate to afford these children the best recreational experience available in Joburg”.
The official opening will be on 30 July and the children from Forest Town’s Multiple Sclerosis care home will be in attendance.
