Illovo pavements left in poor condition
ILLOVO - Residents continue to complain about the state of their pavements after work was done by an unknown contractor in the area.

According to residents, the pavements are in an appalling condition.
“Large manholes were installed with large square concrete blocks around them,” said a resident.
“The (already crumbling) pavement has been left in the most shocking state; they didn’t even bother to re-tarmac. The dug up tarmac was just dumped on the corner,” said a resident.
The manholes were created outside 241 Oxford Road (Canterbury Hall flats) and the other outside 245 Oxford Road (Oxford Mews flats).
The Johannesburg Roads Agency, who are responsible for reinstatement, were unable to comment in time of publishing, however the agency was aware of the issue and was investigating.
Ward 90 councillor Anthony Still said that while the agency remains ultimately responsible for reinstatement, it would appear that other third parties such as building contractors and >cellphone companies were operating in an increasingly sloppy manner with little regard for the quality or completeness of their work.
“This is just unethical and it is so easy to just blame the municipality all the time,” said Ward 90 councillor Still.
“Nevertheless, the Johannesburg Roads Agency needs to be much more assertive in following up with contractors,” Ward 90 councillor added.

Apart from being an unsightly sight, the pavements are a safety hazard to the community and passersby. “It’s not
only unacceptable from the point of view of how it looks, but the holes in the dirt are also becoming dangerous,” said a resident.
