Pirates Club legend retires after 48 years of service

Reckson Murangwana’s time at Pirates Club has come to a heartfelt close after nearly five decades of unwavering dedication.

November 22 was a bittersweet evening at Pirates Club as members and staff gathered to honour a remarkable man whose name has become synonymous with the beloved establishment.

Reckson Murangwana, a loyal employee of 48 years, was celebrated in style as he retired from his position as one of the club’s most cherished team members.

Having joined Pirates Club in 1976 as an 18-year-old groundsman, Murangwana’s dedication and work ethic quickly earned him respect. By 1981, he had taken on the role of barman, a position he held for over four decades. During this time, he became more than just a familiar face behind the counter, he became a trusted confidant, a friend, and a source of wisdom for countless club members.

Non Welsford, the club’s bar manager, spoke with deep admiration about Murangwana’s enduring contributions. “He’s been the most loyal, hardworking, and unbelievable employee we could ever have wished for. Honesty is his number one policy; he would do anything for anyone. Pirates members love him,” she said, visibly emotional.

The retirement celebration was a fitting tribute to a man who has touched many lives. He was honoured with gifts from club members and was officially inducted as an Old Boy, receiving a blazer to commemorate this prestigious status. The atmosphere was electric as emotions ran high, with many attendees reminiscing about their fondest memories of him.

Speaking at the event, Murangwana reflected on his journey. “When I started working here, I didn’t expect to stay this long but I love the job,” he shared. “As a barman, you get to know people and learn from them. If I didn’t understand something, I could always turn to the members at the bar – they were like a family to me.”

The night concluded with laughter, music, and dancing, as Murangwana celebrated alongside members and staff. It was a joyful and heartfelt farewell for a man whose legacy will remain etched in the heart of Pirates Club for years to come.

As Murangwana steps into retirement, he leaves an extraordinary legacy of service, kindness, and community – a true testament to a well-lived life.
