Future tennis talent takes centre stage at Junior UTR event

Courts at The Wanderers came alive as young tennis stars, aged five to nineteen, battled it out with skill, energy, and sportsmanship at the Legacy @ Wanderers Junior UTR Tournament.

The courts at The Wanderers Tennis Club were alive with energy, laughter, and determination as the Legacy @ Wanderers Tennis Academy hosted its Junior Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) Tournament from November 7 to 9.

The event brought together 50 young players, aged between five and 19, who filled the courts with passion and promise.

From the tiny red ball beginners taking their first confident swings to the focused hard ball competitors testing their mettle, the tournament was a true celebration of youth, growth, and sportsmanship.

The Junior UTR, now a growing highlight on the academy’s calendar, first began earlier this year after the academy purchased the licence to become a UTR Verified Club.

Tournament director Vaughn Hunter shared that the inspiration came from a desire to create more match play opportunities for players within the academy and across Gauteng.

“It also gives us a chance to showcase the beautiful venue we have and build a tournament atmosphere that is both fun and competitive,” he said.

This year’s edition saw a notable increase in external participants, adding fresh energy and new rivalries to the friendly competition.

While some of the young players were seasoned competitors, many were experiencing tournament play for the first time, embracing the challenge with wide smiles and steady focus.

Hunter described the event’s success not only by the skill on display but by the smooth running of matches, the cheerful spirit among families, and even managing to outplay the unpredictable weather.

“As the event grows, we hope it helps players feel more comfortable in competition settings and fuels their hunger to develop and improve when they return to training,” he added.

The weekend ended with proud winners and even prouder parents applauding from the sidelines. The champions of the tournament were:
• Boys Hard Ball: Christopher Felet
• Girls Hard Ball: Felicia Ouka
• Boys Green Ball Elite: Santiago Gomes de Jesus
• Girls Green Ball: Sadhana Myneni
• Boys Green Ball: Max Yang
• Orange Ball: Isa Rajah
• Red Ball: Adam Rajah.
