Parktown Boys’ rowing vice captain sets his sights on a golden finish

From a hesitant start to leading his crew, Parktown Boys' Thandolwethu Mogane is chasing a final-season victory at champs, while balancing big dreams beyond the water.

Thandolwethu Mogane did not always imagine himself as a rower.

His journey into the sport began with hesitation, rather than ambition, yet it has grown into one defined by discipline, leadership, and quiet determination. Now a Grade 12 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School, he stands as a committed athlete and vice captain, preparing for one final push at the South African Schools Rowing Championships.

His introduction to rowing dates back to Grade 7, when he attended a school camp, where he was initially reluctant to join. Encouraged by his father, he took the chance, uncertain of what to expect.

What followed was not only a new sporting pursuit but a sense of belonging, forming friendships which played a significant role in shaping his early experience, and sparking a genuine passion for rowing.

Those relationships became the backbone of his development in a sport known for its physical and mental demands. The camaraderie within the team helped him endure the intensity of training, while gradually recognising his own progress and potential.

As the years passed, Thandolwethu refined not only his technique but also his mindset. He learned to approach training with focus and intention, concentrating on each stroke rather than becoming overwhelmed by the bigger picture. This shift allowed him to remain present and consistent, even during the most demanding sessions.

His motivation is rooted in a clear goal. With his final school season under way, he is determined to end on a high by competing strongly at SA Champs. The pursuit of this goal has carried him through early mornings, long afternoons, and the relentless routine required of the sport.

Rowing has also instilled in him a deep sense of perseverance. Challenges, both on and off the water, have reinforced the importance of pushing forward despite setbacks. One race in particular, during his U16 season, remains a defining moment.

Entering the final with high expectations, his crew fell short of their goal. Rather than discouraging him, the experience became a source of motivation, shaping his approach to future competitions.

His growth has been steady and notable. He earned a place in the first team crew in Grade 9 and later achieved half colours, milestones that reflect his dedication. Today, as vice captain alongside Humaid Timol, he leads through both performance and example.

While rowing can often appear individualistic, Thandolwethu has found his strength in teamwork. Having previously competed in sculling, he now values the unity and shared purpose of crew rowing, where success depends on collective effort and trust.

Behind his journey lies strong support from his parents, whose encouragement has enabled him to balance the demands of academics and sport. As his school career draws to a close, Thandolwethu remains focused on finishing with intent. With ambitions of studying civil engineering beyond school, he approaches his final season with clarity, determination, and the desire to leave the sport with no regrets.
