LETTER: Traffic, power outages, politics, transport … the list goes on

Norwood resident Marcelle Batista writes:PLEASE, please, tell me how it could, and does, take one-and-a-half hours to travel 12 kilometers.

I travel 12 kilometers each morning from my home to work, and return in the afternoon. The morning traffic is absolutely a nightmare and that is on a good day, and when there is no load shedding, that is entirely a different kind of poison. Should it rain, then you can add on one more hour. I cannot understand why the traffic should come to a standstill because of a little rain.

Anyhow, back to the usual peak hour rush traffic (no rush there) is unbelievable. Why can we not have an adequate public transport system? How does the entire Europe get it right to accommodate the cars on their roads? How do they have the infrastructure in place to allow for traffic, transport, better roads and workable systems and South Africa cannot get it right.

We have no electricity, bad traffic congestion, no public transport, e-toll problems, water shortages … shall I carry on?

I won’t get into politics.

There has to be a solution to the traffic problems and I am sure I am among one other million people who are affected daily with traffic. Road rage incidents are on the increase and it is simple frustration.

Inherently I think people are good and do not intend to cause bodily harm to someone when they awake that bright Monday morning. All good intentions fly out the window as soon as you get behind that wheel and hit the traffic. By the time I get to work I am frazzled and really annoyed, and it hasn’t set the pace for a good day. You have to learn to brush it off and carry on, but it is a problem that needs addressing and the commitment to solve.

I know that currently there are far larger issues, such as the shortage of power, but there are many urgent problems in this beautiful country of ours that need serious people to solve.

Just out of pure frustration I need to air my view, for what its worth.

Thank you

Best regards
