OPINION: Do you believe Joburg is prepared for floods similar to those experienced in KwaZulu-Natal?

ROSEBANK — Do you think the city of Joburg is ready for a similar natural disaster as in KwaZulu Natal?

After more than a week of torrential rain which resulted in one of South Africa’s deadliest natural disasters in Kwazulu-Natal, Rosebank Killarney Gazette asked residents if they believed Joburg is prepared for natural disasters (floods) similar to those experienced in KwaZulu-Natal.

NOE NKHWASHU: I am not so sure but Joburg might be prepared because it is mostly flat and we can survive here.
CHARLES DUKE: I believe that historically, low-lying locations such as Joburg CBD, Benoni, and Fourways would have experienced the same severity of rainfall as KZN. However, because the land is flatter in Joburg as a whole, we would not see such a disaster as in KZN.
VHO MPFARISENI RIHLAMPFU: From a geographical point, I believe that the city of Joburg will survive because Joburg is flat and dry. Also, I don’t think we will experience such severe rains as we do not have an ocean.
SANDRA SEBELE: I think Joburg would not survive at all. Take for instance how many water drains work properly here. Joburg is not prepared at all.
