Thandolwethu Mayisela triumphs at the 2024 Master Spelling Bee

Thandolwethu Mayisela, Hyde Park High School learner has won the provincial and national titles in the 2024 Master Spelling Bee's Melittidae category, marking a two-year journey of dedication and hard work.

Hyde Park High School learner Thandolwethu Mayisela has made history by winning the provincial and national titles in the 2024 Master Spelling Bee’s Melittidae category (grades 10-12).

This victory marks an extraordinary two-year journey filled with hard work and unwavering dedication.

Thandolwethu’s passion for spelling began in 2022 when she first entered the competition.

Her impressive track record includes first-place finishes in the provincial and national Honeybee category (grades 7-9) before she embarked on her path to the senior category.

According to her, last year she represented South Africa in the international Master Spelling Bee held in Dubai, where she finished as the second runner-up in the senior category, also being named the best South African performer.

Thandolwethu said, “Winning this year is an incredible feeling. It is the result of two years of consistent effort and preparation.”

She added the experience in Dubai taught her so much and gave her the confidence to continue pushing her limits.

“Joining Hyde Park High School this year presented new academic challenges but I was determined to overcome them.”

Thandolwethu’s commitment to excellence has been unwavering.

“I spent hours studying and practising my words, and it has truly paid off. The Master Spelling Bee has taught me valuable life skills, such as focus and staying calm under pressure. This journey has not only helped me improve my vocabulary and spelling but also instilled in me a deeper sense of persistence and resilience.”

She was grateful for the support of her school.

“I am proud to represent Hyde Park High School. My win shows that with hard work and determination, anything is possible, I am excited to take on new challenges and continue to push myself to achieve even more.”
