SPCA climbers off to Kili

A group of 33 intrepid mountaineers are taking on the heights of Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Sandton SPCA.

The group of climbers will leave Johannesburg on 2 September.

They will begin their climb on 4 September and are expected to summit on 9 September.

The aim is to raise in excess of R500 000 for the SPCA which will be used to pay for various projects, including the mobile clinic which operates in Alexandra, Bez Valley and Hillbrow.

“There is a common misconception that because we are called the Sandton SPCA, we are a wealthy organisation,” said fundraising manager for the Sandton SPCA, Candice Scorer. “This is not the case. We work in many of the townships around Johannesburg, and have to work hard to do the work we do.”

Last year the climbers managed to raise a total of R400 000 for their cause, and this year they are well on their way to improving on that.

“The climbers themselves have already raised R390 000, but we are looking for corporate sponsorship to get us the rest of the way,” said Scorer.
