Cops raid holidaymakers

Thousands strip-searched as travellers go home

VANDERBIJLPARK – With the heavy traffic flows of holidaymakers making their way to different holiday getaways and destinations, cops ensured no one was coming in and out of Gauteng with illegal goods.

On Thursday morning, December 12, dozens of law enforcement agency personnel barricaded the N1 between Vanderbijlpark and Parys on a stop-and-search Operation Shanela.

Sedibeng police, Gauteng Traffic Cops, Home Affairs officials, and different officials gathered to strip search motor vehicles coming in and out of Gauteng.

Minibus taxis had passengers jumped off and their bags searched.

Motorists were also pulled out on the side for vehicle checks, engine verification, and luggage searches.

Speaking to Ster, Nqobile Zimu (40) “I am happy That cops are actually taking an initiative to do these roads blocks to make sure that we are all safe. These operations should be done more often so that no illegal things are brought into the province,” she said.

Buhle Dlamini (37), another motorist who was frustrated by the long traffic

following the operation said the operation was a necessity for all motorists.

“We often come back from the holidays super tired however the operation

is a way of making sure that the roads are crime-free. We often hear of hijacking in this route and this part of town, with the operation we are sure safe from all the thuggery activities,” she added.
