Govt employee cuffed for fraud in Oudtshoorn

The employee was charged with fraud and theft amounting to almost R600k.

A financial clerk in the department of transport in Oudtshoorn has been charged with fraud and theft.

A media statement issued by the South African Police Service on Thursday stated that Grace Malgas, 32, appeared in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on Tuesday following her arrest by the Hawks on the same day.

“She has been charged with fraud and theft, apparently perpetrated in the department of transport in Oudtshoorn, amounting to almost R600 000,” the statement read.

“It is alleged that between 2013-2016, Malgas, a financial clerk within the department unlawfully manipulated the systems to divert funds to her personal account apparently deceitfully using her supervisor’s user ID to authorise the illegal payments.”

Malgas is expected back in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on November 17.
