IT was another busy weekend for volunteers from Port Edward and Shelly Beach National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
* A teacher (27) was treated for a possible broken left wrist as well as possible head and spinal injuries last Thursday. The teacher was part of a Pretoria school group being hosted at the adventure camp near Port Edward. The NSRI first-aider was working close to the camp at the time when he found the woman semi-conscious on the ground at the end of a zip line. She was treated and later taken to hospital.
* NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew sprang into action when it was reported that a man (29) from Bloemfontein was having a seizure on board the charter boat, C-Freaks last Saturday. Commander Jeremiah Jackson of Shelly Beach Station said the incident happened off Lucien Beach about four miles south of Shelly Beach. “Our duty crew was asked to wait at the Shelly Beach launch site for the patient as C-Freaks was en route with him. After his vital signs were checked, he was taken to hospital,” he said.
* Crew of NSRI Shelly Beach assisted the fishing charter vessel, The Greatest Catch, which reported engine failure off Uvongo, two miles south of Shelly Beach. Sea Rescue boats, Spirit of Dawn and Caltex Challenger 2, which were on exercise at the time, responded and met with The Greatest Catch off Uvongo. Two passengers were transferred from charter boat to Caltex Challenger 2 and three passengers onto Spirit of Dawn. All were safely brought back to Shelly Beach.”
Commander Jackson said the crew was able to get The Greatest Catch’s engines going and he remained aboard with the skipper until they reached Shelly Beach safely.
