Treat planned for nature lovers

Find out all about Umtamvuna Nature Reserve at the awareness day.

THE Umtamvuna Honorary Officers are holding an awareness day to introduce local and visiting nature lovers to a very special place, the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve near Port Edward

This lesser-known wild corner of the South Coast, which embraces a section of the Umtamvuna River Gorge and boasts some dramatic scenery, is primarily a floral reserve. As a haven for plant life it is of immense importance for it is part of what scientists call the Pondoland Centre of Endemism. In laymen’s terms this means it is part of an internationally recognised botanical hot spot, boasting a huge variety of grasses, wild flowers, trees and shrubs, many of them not found anywhere else on earth.

The awareness day takes place at the reserve on Saturday, December 10, starting at 8am when tea and coffee will be served. Weather permitting, guided walks will take place at 8.30am, 9.30am and 10.30am. A lucky draw will take place at 11.30am. Boerewors rolls will be on sale and there will be tea, coffee, bottled water and juice for children.

Inside the hall the honorary officers will set up tables of interest, displaying information on a range of subjects. Visitors can learn about plants, both indigenous and alien invasive and what mammal and bird research environmental scientists are doing with camera traps. There will be information on the The Red Desert and a display will educate visitors about the effect of snares on our wildlife.

Also of interest will be a display about the work being done regarding the Oribi Cape vultures that sometimes stop over at Umtamvuna on their way to other areas. Lastly guests can find out all about the Eco-Educational Kids Club that has met on the first Saturday of every month for the past year. Honorary officers will be available to chat about what they do and why they are so needed. For more information contact Debbie King at 072 5067208.
