Deejay Kevin Grenfell rides for TB awareness after losing mother to rare strain

In a quest to lift children out of the shadows of TB and in celebration of his mother's life Kevin was inspired to get on his bike.

WORLD TB Day, observed last Friday, March 24, is particularly meaningful for top South African DJ and musician Kevin Grenfell as he lost his mother to a rare strain of TB (Mycobacterium Avium Complex) in March last year.

Her death prompted Kevin to learn more about a deadly, misunderstood disease. He discovered TB is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and that many victims are children under the age of 10.

In fact, every day, up to 200 children die from TB despite it being preventable and curable. In South Africa there is an urgent need for public attention, prioritisation, commitment and funding for this disease.

He’ll be competing in the annual Old Mutual joBurg2c Mountain Bike race from 21 to 29 April, to raise funds for OneVoice South Africa (OVSA) a KwaZulu-Natal-based organisation that uses innovative and creative ways to involve young people in critical health and lifestyle issues.

The gruelling event is the longest paired mountain biking stage race in South Africa. In nine days entrants cycle about 900 kilometres from Heidelberg in Gauteng to Scottburgh.

Kevin’s entry has been sponsored by Old Mutual and his fund-raising drive will be hosted on the company’s portal ‘More than Yourself’. His journey as a rider for this worthy cause will also be featured in the immediate lead up to the race and during the race period on eNCA.
